If working with children has taught me anything, it is that children have #nofilter and the words that come out of their mouths is the truth; the good, the bad and the ugly. I like to use it as my guiding compass for whether or not a kid likes me and if I should make a change. Here are some examples: “I like walking with you because you listen to me when we walk and talk, that makes me happy.” “You are a little crazy, but that’s what makes you fun.” “I wish you were my dad.” These tell me I am a good listener, kind, but a little kooky. I also get, “You smell like coffee,” and “I can see up your nose, it is very hairy in there”. Those little voices remind me that I may be a pretty cool dude, but there is always room for improvement.
